Spider-Man Cake (for the second time!)


I made a Spider-Man themed cake for my daughter's birthday a few years back (I never figured out why she wanted a Spider-Man themed birthday party, since she knew nothing of Spider-Man at the time, but that's what she wanted, so that's what she got!), and I really thought that might be my only Spider-Man cake, until my son asked for one for his 5th birthday party last weekend. So here I was again, covering a cake in red fondant, and trying to make it a little different than the last time. I admit, I got a few ideas from the internet, and found a great template with a Spider Man face to help guide me along in my fondant cutting for Spider-Man's eyes.

If you want to make a Spider Man cake, really all you need is the following:

  • Rice Krispy recipe, made in a round bowl lined with plastic wrap (for Spiderman's head & face)


  • Black and red fondant (you can colour these yourself, but it's easier to buy them already coloured). I love Duff's fondant line for cakes, but many others will do just fine.

  • You may want blue, silver or yellow fondant to wrap the bottom cake in.

  • An 8" or larger cake to put the Spiderman head onto. You can make this or buy it.  I made a great recipe for chocolate cake with beets in it (click here for the recipe). The icing recipe is also below in the same link.

  • A small cake round or cardboard that you can cut to the shape Spiderman's head (it makes it easier if the Rice Krispy head cake is on a cardboard that can easily be lifted off the bottom cake to slice).

  • A LOT of time! Plan to spend a day on this cake. I started at 6:00pm and worked until 1:00 a.m., and I`ve had experience with fondant cakes.  So you may want to start at 8:00 a.m. and plan a day. Or bake the insides on one evening and make your vanilla icing, and then tackle the decorating the next evening.
